Interview w/ SILVERSTEIN

Tags:

SILVERSTEIN is one of the bands that you watch on TV, hear on the radio, in the pub or in your car and once you hear them, there won´t be any remain of doubt why this band got to be so big, in this interview Shane talks about the Canadian music scene, the disgusting seals slaughter, his new record label and some other topics so have fun!!!
By: Miguel Guinness
Who is Shel Silverstein’s biggest fan in your band?
Shane: I think probably is Josh the biggest fan because it was his book that we found the book and we took the name from but I love Shel Silverstein too and I read his stuff as a kid.
After being almost 10 years around, do you think that Canadian music scene is getting bigger?
Shane: maybe in a mainstream level yeah!! Is gotten bigger like huge bands are coming out of Canada like Nickelback or some other huge bands but I think that in the underground scene is getting actually smaller, specially the punk rock scene, I feel like it used to be more unity more local shows and stuff and now is almost gone away, but there are a lot of indie rock bands coming out as well and is great to see bands like dark kid fire and broken social scene and all that kind of stuff which is really cool but in terms of punk rock is gotten really smaller.
SILVERSTEIN already played in a couple of different continents, so which difference you have noticed between other continents and Europe?
Shane: I think that European fans are very passionate about rock music, especially in Germany and Austria, in Austria they really listen a lot more and I find people in Canada, the U.S. and even in Mexico and south America they are kind of just there and kind of just going crazy and especially in Mexico they just start to go crazy and it´s like there are not even listening that internally they are just kinda riot, woohooo, riot (laughs) and they simply love the fact to have a good time but here people is like ok I´m here, I´m listening focused in the music but that is cool too.
Which is SILVERSTEIN´s next goal?
Shane: Ok well we are finishing up this tour and we are going home for Christmas and we will take some time off to write new songs, we already have a lot written and we are looking to record a new record sometime next year, it´s gonna be an interesting year for us because we are finishing our contract next year with our record company so we will see where do we go from here, next year is gonna be our 10th anniversary and a lot of special things are going to happen, a lot of stuff that we gotta do, so it´s exciting.
Well your contract is almost over, but how victory records helped you to get the acceptance you have now?
Shane: They helped us out the first time we came over and they bought us tickets to go to the U.K.  which was really nice of them to do that, we were lucky that victory have presence worldwide and not just in the U.S.
A few months or a year ago was like a big hatred war against emos what do you think about that primitive behavior?
Shane: Like in Mexico about all this my chemical romance or something? You know I look at that not so seriously it was like in 1985 with all this thing about the twisted sisters or the thing with the Al Gore´s wife, it´s just bullshit because is meaningless is a thing that just comes an go, we are here just to play music we are not here to promote any kind of image or anything so it doesn’t matter to me.
Most of the bands have a lot of line-up changes but yours seems to be pretty solid, what´s the secret to keep a band united?
Shane: Well that’s a good question, mmmh I don’t know, I think we are pretty easy going and we are people who recognize that anyone can make mistakes and that nobody is perfect and that we over looked those things against each other, we are very honest to each other and everything that is happened, I think we are here because of the same reason which is to play in this band and enjoying being part of it, we are not here just to get a pay check or we are not here to see how many records we can sell, we are here because we love to play music and that’s our passion and I think that’s what have kept us together for so many years.
So Shane how do you manage your time, with all the things you do in a daily basis?
Shane: At the moment I´m running a record company which takes me a lot of my time, I just need to stay motivated and set goals and try to reach them and well just work. My record label is called VERONA RECORDS and I manage a bunch of bands from Canada.
What do you think of the seals slaughter in Canada?
Shane: It sucks totally.
What are your opinions about this stupid issue that Mexicans need a visa to go to Canada and vice versa?
Shane: I don’t know why the reason to do that is, most of the border protection is in the U.S. with all this stupid terrorism thing drug trade but I don’t know how it deals to Canada, I think is annoying.
Any plans to go back to Mexico?
Shane: Of course we are still trying the last time was in 2007 we played in Mexico city and Monterrey and it was awesome and honestly we have been trying but there are not so many organizers and then we set a date and then they change it and that sucks because we know we have so many Mexican fans and we love them so I hope to go there again.
Shout outs!!
Shane: Thx to all our fans in Austria, Europe, Mexico thanks for all your support and we are really looking forward to play again here and keep rocking.
