Jugendkultur goes Hollabrunn

Masturbation Records bzw. der Verein zur Förderung alternativer Musikkultur wurde bereits vor 10 Jahren von Mitgliedern ortsansässiger Punkbands in Hollabrunn gegründet. Wirkungsstätte dabei ist der Alte Schlachthof Hollabrunn. Nachdem dieser nach seiner Schließung 3 Jahre leer stand, stand die Idee im Raum, die mehr als baufälligen Gebäude als Jugend- und Kulturzentrum zu nutzen.
Durch Förderungen durch das Land NÖ und der niederösterreichischen Stadt- und Dorferneuerung konnte der Umbau schlussendlich finanziert werden.


Förderungen regionaler Musikkultur


Die Idee hinter Masturbation Records war vor allem, die vereinseigenen Bands in allen Belangen zu unterstützen, um nicht von Veranstaltungsstätten oder Aufnahmestudios abhängig zu sein. In den Nebengebäuden wurden daher Proberäume und die Möglichkeit, das Gespielte auch aufzunehmen, eingerichtet. So entstand dabei der legendäre Masturbation Records Sampler, der einen Überblick über die regionalen Musikprojekte gab.


Der Hauptaugenmerk des Vereins, mit dem eine Veranstaltungsplattform geschaffen wurde, liegt daher in der Förderung von lokalen Bands. Zu Beginn lag der Fokus hauptsächlich in die Punk Richtung, mittlerweile haben sich die Türen des Schlachthofs in Bezug auf die eigenen Bands und die Veranstaltungen auch für andere Stile geöffnet. Nachdem im Vorjahr erstmalig ein Drum’n Bass Event in den Hallen des Schlachthofs abgehalten wurde und somit viele tanzbegeisterte Jugendliche nach Hollabrunn gelockt hat, entschlossen sich die Mitglieder auch heuer, einer Crew aus der Umgebung die Möglichkeit zu bieten, ihre elektronischen Beats unters Publikum zu bringen.


Masturbation Records versteht sich also nicht als ein Label, welches Touren oder dergleichen organisiert. Sie verstehen sich als Veranstaltungsplattform, die wie der rechtliche Name schon sagt, alternative Musikkultur im Weinviertel fördert.


Musikalische Highlights


Seit der Gründung im Jahre 2000 versuchen die Mitglieder des Vereins regelmäßig Konzerte zu veranstalten. In erster Linie werden die eigenen bzw. regionalen Bands gefördert, durch die Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre konnten immer auch österreichische wie auch internationale Topacts gewonnen werden.
Im Rahmen ihrer Abschiedstour waren die Punkband WIZO 2005 Gast im ausverkauften Alten Schlachthof Hollabrunn.


Mittlerweile hat sich ein Netzwerk mit anderen Veranstaltungsplattformen in ganz Österreich gebildet.

Jugendkultur goes Hollabrunn

Masturbation Records was founded 10 years ago in Hollabrunn, by members of local punk bands. The town’s out-of-use slaughterhouse (the so-called “Alter Schlachthof Hollabrunn”, soon to be known as the ASH) functions as headquarters and event location alike. The idea to use the ASH as a center for youth/culture came up three years after the slaughterhouse had been abandoned. Owing to financial back-up by the district of lower Austria, the project eventually took shape and the ASH received a thorough makeover.

Support of regional music

The basic concept of Masturbation Records has always revolved around supporting its protégé bands in every way possible, rendering them independent from both bookers and producers. Hence, the ASH-buildings adjacent to the main complex were turned into rehearsal rooms and a little recording studio. These became the cradle of the now legendary Masturbation Records Sampler, which gave an overview of the local music scene.


Having established a platform for music events, the association’s main interest lies in the support of local bands. The focus has shifted or rather expanded from punk to a greater variety of genres, which is noticeable in the wide array of both artists and events. The previous year has seen the Masturbation Records’ highly acclaimed Drum’n’Bass premiere. Returning to the slaughterhouse stage in 2010, the event again offered a local crew the opportunity to spread their beats and increase their fanbase.


Masturbation Records is not a label. It is not about booking tours but about providing a platform for events supporting local alternative music.


Music Highlights


Since its foundation in the year 2000, the members of Masturbation Records try putting on concerts on a regular basis. First and foremost, the association supports its protégé bands and regional artists respectively. Due to the growing reputation of the slaughterhouse, a great number of Austrian and international top-acts came to visit Hollabrunn. For instance, renowned punk band WIZO played the ASH on their 2005 farewell tour and some other bands such as The Unseen(US), RX Bandits(US), Useless ID(Isr), Rasta Knast (Ger), Elvis Jackson (Slo), The Argies(Arg), Misconduct(Swe), Star fucking hipsters(US) and more... 


By now, Masturbation Records is connected to various other event platforms around Austria via a tight network.
