Interview w/ PROPAGANDHI

Tags:

I got the luck to contact Propagandhi, before their show in Vienna, and they were really happy to come back again to Austria. This interview turned a bit political so if you are in to political point of views this interview is for you. So here we go!!

By: Miguel Guinness.

Tell us something about small man records?
Todd: Well they have been around for a while with great bands like comeback kid, misery signals and a few more, this label is based in Canada and is all good.
What or who influenced PROPAGANDHI to create anarchist punk?
Todd: I guess the world around us and besides that we enjoy bands like MDC, THE EXPLOITED and bands like that, is cool to have such bands which lyrics say something and that’s what inspired me and walking around the world trying to understand it, so the things we noticed which are wrong we just put them in our music.
Beaver: Ok I just joined the band 3 years ago and would like to say that PROPAGHANDI is one of the bands who inspired me since I was young they opened up my eyes of different things i never thought about it before.
Do you still believe that anarchism could be a social system nowadays?
Todd: For me the idea of anarchism is something that people have to build a world in the future where this is possible or not, but at the moment everyone is just brutal, collapsing and violent so just the mighty persons would rise to the top. I think anarchy is a system for mentally challenged people who are interested in make a change. And the reality that we live now is reigned by the war lords, religious leaders and crap like that u know? So when people hear the word anarchy they think is just chaos or destruction, when in reality is totally the opposite. So it would take a lot of years to have a real good anarchism, just you have to start from yourself, start to make bonds with people from other places of the world and trying to make them understand people from your same street, same city is always a good beginning.
There´s a new campaign which started in England and since a few days started to spread through Europe and is a peculiar campaign because is about Ads which say GOD DOESN´T EXIST! So what is your posture about it?
Todd: I guess there is no reason of why they shouldn’t be able to post these ads, you know there is full of churches all over, so I am fine with it!!
Beaver: So even in Winnipeg we have these messages so there is nothing bad about these messages.
Todd: Is hard for me to know because I´m not religious.
Beaver: So I think is not the smartest way to do this because I think is not going to chance a lot of minds, is more like telling people that you are wrong so it´s going to make people angry.
About the immigration issue all over the world, can you tell us something about it??
Todd: The way I see is if a country is going to bring a flow of refugees to a certain country where there are hardly adapted, so I mean that there could be some connection between these countries but not a fair connection, is always hard for those persons because they can´t find jobs, so they start to steal or do some illegal things, you know? But these persons sometimes have no choice and they have to emigrate but you can´t bring a whole country for example Kenya or any African country where things are too bad. Canada for example went to some African countries and they destroyed their habitats and now this people has no choice so they have to leave their lands, is like the U.S. in Mexico is up to the US the way they deal with Mexico, it´s so unjust, so unfair that the people have to leave Mexico sometimes to get a better life a better job and then the people in the US don’t want them.
So now focusing more in the band tell us something about SUPPORTING CASTE your new release?
Beaver: We are really excited to have the chance to play new songs, I totally like it!
Now that PROPAGANDHI has new members, does your style of music changed??
Todd: Yeah still sounds like us, we are still here but sometimes I want to go off the edge and play something more frenetic, but well we are still playing we have Beaver now practising really hard, Chris, Me and we are really enjoying what we do at the moment.
What about your hit called SKA SUCKS that is covered by hundred of bands?
Todd: Yeah everyone likes ska sucks and is weird because is not the music direction we have, is like people like this song so much but you cant compare it with any other of our songs, because is not in the heavy music style that we have, you know? Because ska music is more popular than heavy, dark music is kind of frustrating but is true! We are more trying to give a message to inspire people to do anything but SKANK!(laughs) is definitely not our music.
Have you ever had a problem from the ska community about this song? So is this song a joke or do you really think that ska sucks??
Todd: Yeah is like true, no one of us like ska, not even beaver likes ska (laughs).
The last thing is what do you expect of people today here in Vienna, after your long absence on stages?
Todd: Yeah the last time we played in Vienna was in this room, it was awesome but the last time we played here was the worst time we ever played in our life, it was terrible we were so embarrassed and sad, so tonight we will try to fix that mistake we did.
