Interview w/ THE GOGETS (Austria)

Tags:

If this year you are going to Frequency Festival, Better dont miss THE GOGETS show at the red bull brandwagen, This band have already played big festivals like i.e. Nova Rovk where they share stage with bands like THE PRODIGY. They played a few shows in Asia too and a lot of European countries, We made this interview at the Auradau festival and this is all they said..

By: Miguel Guinness
How did u get to be so international in such a short time?
Gisi (voice, guitar): Because we have a great booking guy called Niki plastic, we never ever met him, but anyway he is cool (laughs) We don’t know if he is a boy or a girl or both at the same time (laughs)
Niki (bass, voice): Nah seriously, Is hard work but if you work hard to get some shows outside Austria, you can make it, is up on your own power or energy that you invest as a band.
Now that I can remember you played already big shows for example flogging molly and frequency festival, tell us something about these experiences?
Niki: Is great to be part of something bigger, out of underground concerts or just playing in youth centres and stuff, is cool being part of a festival which is so big as frequency festival is and to see that and play along with bands like the killers, even if you don’t share the same stage but is a good sensation to be part of it. A brand new experience for people like us.
Talking about concerts you play which audience do you consider is the craziest audience that you ever play to?
Niki and Gisi: Czech Republic!! People there are crazy.
Niki: But the most crazy people we ever play to of course was Malaysia because is not common that European bands go there because you hardly make some money out of it, there is no money to earn honestly, so no big international acts are interested in play in these places where they get more or less nothing; but anyway a good audience people appreciate it to see, listen bands that flew 15 hours in a plane and being there is really different.
The Gogets used to be three now you changed your drummer and you added a new guitarist, how is it going with them?
Schmidl (drummer): Pretty much in a word is awesome!! The last years I used to play with other awesome people but in this band there is so much energy, the good thing is that I can bring all my ideas and they are opened to new stuff.
Matse (guitar): It’s a very interesting experience, I played before for another band called loony brain and we were quite politically commited and just to join this band with such cool characters as Niki and Gisi, is a lot of fun going with them, and now I’m so amazed with the new CD which have a lot of amazing melodies and great songs so it was a great opportunity to me to knew all this people.
How do you find last minute shows like this today, in which you were invited 1 or 2 days ago?
Gisi: So I got a call yesterday and they say that they have a slot for us in Auradau, because a band cancelled in the last minute. Regularly I just ask for the girls, money, cocaine (laughs), black jack and whiskey and if that fits? Then we come and if not I have to say sorry (laughs) I prefer to go to the casino.
Who started the band? Who were the men who joined friends to make organized noise?
Gisi: The band who started the band is not here anymore, not in the band anymore…..is just a joke (laughs) Nah the truth is our last drummer, Niki and Me were the founders of the gogets, the drummer was away for one year which we made a break then he came back, then he played for one more year with us, then we had another drummer and now we are in this constellation so…a lot of drama changes in this band.
Niki: We started the band when we were 15 years old, I just made music with Gisi my entire life, he was the first one and in the last years it started to develop in the direction that we understand each other without saying a word that’s pretty cool that you play with people and you know what they mean even if they don’t say anything.
What do you think about the appreciation of Austrian bands in your own country? Like the support from the people, the festivals, organizers, etc… Do you think that they still prefer foreign bands over the national bands??
Gisi: They always prefer foreign bands, It doesn’t matter to which country do you go it is something always special to have a foreign band in your country; Even if they are not good or even known, still they come from a different country everybody is interested, that is kind of a strange rule in the world (laughs).
Niki: I toured with my second band JM Kanes in the UK 2 times this year and if you compare it with the Austrian music scene is way bigger and the industry is so huge, so many news paper, magazine, TV channels…well that doesn’t exist in Austria but that doesn’t mean that is not possible to get out of Austria and get a bigger international act cause of the fact that you are from Austria, it depends more on yourself doesn’t matter where do you come from.
Are THE GOGETS interested in being a radio hit band or your interest is more to be an underground band?? Or what THE GOGETS think about it??
Niki: Well I think what we want is to play for people any audience it doesn’t matter as long they like your music that is not important because we reach more people when we play with bigger bands so why not?
Schmidl: You don’t have to be like other bands, maybe there are clichés concerning that some bands are like other bands because they play together, I think that has nothing to do with your music, your attitude.
Gisi: ……open minded… (laughs)
What do you think about christian metalcore?
Niki: Christian metal core??!! As long as I don’t have to listen to it I think I can do it.
Gisi: I stepped out of church
Schmidl: mmhhhhh???? I don’t know
Matse: Just let them express their opinion but is not my thing, not mine at all (laughs)
Gisi: (more laughs) yeah let them do what they want to do but just in the church!!
Any thanks to anyone?
Niki: Thx to my parents, for giving me power to continue, to all the people that we worked with, to the people who listen to our music and the people from alter schlachthof in Hollabrunn who supported us from the very first day.
Matse: To my parents for supporting me in my shows, and MTV of course (laughs) to anyone who attend our shows, and help us to have a good time.
Gisi: I would like to thank our booker Niki plastic, our band bus for always bringing us to our target without hitting any target (laughs) and I wanna thank our drummer Schmidl and our new guitarist Matse and of course thanks to you Miguel (laughs).
Schmidl: Thanks to my family, my beautiful girlfriend and The Gogets, the promoters who book us at their gigs and finally to you Miguel for providing us this interview.
